A person falsely practicing as a lawyer in Kenya under the name Brian Mwenda has been arrested. This 'fake lawyer' reportedly won 26 cases in various Kenyan courts despite lacking legal training. The real Brian Mwenda Ntwiga, whom the imposter had impersonated, discovered discrepancies in his account details and reported the issue to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
The imposter gained access to the LSK's portal, changed account details, and uploaded a photo, falsely claiming to be trained in law. The LSK has clarified that the real Brian Mwenda Ntwiga did not apply for a practicing certificate since he had been working at the Office of the Attorney General and did not require one until he tried to access his profile in September 2023.
This incident has sparked outrage, particularly among legal professionals. While some view the 'fake lawyer' as impressive, the Director of Public Prosecutions in Kenya has instructed an investigation into the case and warned about unqualified individuals posing as lawyers
