In a candid revelation, Kerry Washington, the acclaimed 46-year-old actress, has opened up about her struggles with an eating disorder, describing the mental health condition as something "beyond my control". Drawing from her upcoming memoir, Thicker Than Water, Washington shared intimate details of her past traumas and profound "body hatred".

Speaking to Good Morning America, the actress recounted, "I was good at control. I could party all night and drink and smoke and have sex and still show up and have good grades. I knew how to manage. I was so high functioning and the food took me out." She further delved into the depths of her body dysmorphia, admitting that her overwhelming hatred towards her body made her seek external help. "I don't know how to live with this," the Scandal star confessed.

The pain became so unbearable for Washington that she no longer wanted to live, a revelation that she admitted "scared" her. When probed about suicidal tendencies, she responded, "Yeah. The behaviour was tiny, little acts of trying to destroy myself."

However, the Little Fires Everywhere star has found a healthier relationship with food, stating, "It's just very different now. It's not to the extreme. There's no suicidal ideation. That is not where I am anymore." Washington, who recently went viral for a photograph with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and singer Kelly Rowland at Beyonce's 42nd birthday concert, has been married to American actor and film producer Nnamdi Asomugha since 2013. The couple shares two children.

Her full interview on Good Morning America is set to air on September 24.
