Three National Youth Service Corps members who were kidnapped in Zamfara State shared their traumatic experiences after being held captive for up to a year. They endured torture, starvation, and harsh conditions. After the military rescue, they are now appealing for government jobs to help reintegrate into society.
In a harrowing account, three of the eight National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members kidnapped in Zamfara State recounted their traumatic experiences after regaining freedom. The corps members, who spent between two months and nearly a year in captivity, revealed the inhumane conditions they endured. They were tortured, forced to eat grass, and made to drink floodwater while isolated in a forest without proper shelter.
The abduction occurred on August 17, 2023, when the corps members were ambushed at a makeshift roadblock. During their captivity, they faced constant threats from their captors and witnessed the dangers of wildlife in the area, including snakes and scorpions. One of the victims, Solomon, described the severe torture he faced, including being beaten and chained, which led to health complications.
Following a rescue operation by the military on August 22, 2024, the freed corps members expressed gratitude to various government officials and security operatives for their efforts. They appealed for government assistance in securing jobs to help them reintegrate into society after their traumatic experiences. They have received their discharge certificates and wish to continue their service year instead of starting anew, hoping for compassion and support from the authorities.
