A Lagos State High Court, presided over by Justice Ibironke Harrison, has sentenced Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Drambi Vandi to death by hanging for the killing of a pregnant Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem. The tragic incident occurred at the Ajah under-bridge checkpoint on December 25, 2022, and caused widespread outrage, particularly on social media, leading to Vandi's suspension.
Initially charged with murder, Vandi was found guilty of manslaughter due to a lack of intent during the trial. The prosecution presented eleven witnesses, including eight police officers, and submitted 27 exhibits as evidence. In contrast, the defendant, Vandi, testified in his defense, pleading not guilty to the one-count charge of murder under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Justice Harrison, while delivering the verdict at Tafa Balewa Square in Lagos, concluded that there was sufficient oral and documentary evidence to link the defendant to the crime, ultimately finding him guilty of murder. This ruling serves as a significant development in the case, bringing justice to the victim and her family
