LASTMA has warned that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving in Lagos could lead to serious penalties, including vehicle impoundment, prison time, or community service. The policy, under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, aims to reduce distracted driving and improve road safety across the city.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has made it clear that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving is a punishable offense under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. In a recent post shared on its official social media page, LASTMA reminded motorists that such actions distract drivers and pose significant risks to road safety. This new directive is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and promote safer driving habits in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s busiest urban areas.

According to the law, those caught violating this regulation could face severe penalties, including having their vehicles impounded, serving up to three months in prison, or being sentenced to six months of community service, depending on the severity of the offense. LASTMA emphasized that these measures are crucial for improving the overall safety of Lagos roads.

The post also highlighted that the law seeks to tackle the growing concerns over distracted driving and its contribution to accidents. Public reactions have been mixed, with some praising the initiative for promoting road safety, while others worry about its enforcement.
