In a bid to tackle persistent traffic congestion in the Lekki area of Lagos, the state's Ministry of Environment and Water Resources initiated the removal of inner gates.
The government cited the gates' indiscriminate placement as a defacement of the environment and a source of "untold hardship" for road users.
The enforcement operation, authorized by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, targeted specific roads, including Sir Rufus Foluso Giwa and Abike Sulaiman.
Kunle Adeshina, the ministry’s spokesperson, announced the action on social media, emphasizing the necessity to restore the area's aesthetics and ease accessibility.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab assured that the government aimed to align Lekki with the original state masterplan. Residents' associations were urged to voluntarily remove such gates from their estates or communities.
The move follows days of traffic snarls, prompting the government to take decisive action to address the mounting issue. The removal initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance traffic flow and restore the planned infrastructure in Lagos.
