The Lagos State Government has revoked all existing building permits, mandating builders to reapply for validation before continuing construction.
This decision follows the tragic collapse of a building at 13, Wilson Mba Street, Maryland, Lagos, which resulted in the death of five workers.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, announced the revocation during a visit to the collapse site.
He stated that all construction commencement certificates are revoked immediately, and builders must revalidate their permits with LASBCA to avoid having their sites sealed.
Babatunde expressed sorrow over the incident and highlighted the need for strict adherence to building regulations to prevent future collapses.
Oki detailed LASBCA's response to the recent collapse and outlined plans to inspect and possibly demolish unsafe structures.
He stressed that all construction sites must engage a full team of professionals to ensure compliance with building codes. Additionally, Oki announced that LASBCA would enforce construction hours and prohibit on-site sleeping to enhance worker safety.
The government's move aims to address negligence and regulatory breaches by property owners and developers.
