In response to a recent surge in severe gastroenteritis cases across Lagos State, particularly in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe, health authorities have declared a heightened state of alert. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, confirmed that the state is investigating a potential cholera outbreak.
As of the latest reports, the outbreak has resulted in 60 hospitalizations and five fatalities due to severe dehydration. Authorities suspect water contamination in areas such as Lekki and Victoria Island may be contributing to the spread.
"We are treating this situation with utmost seriousness," said Prof. Abayomi in a statement. "Samples have been collected for testing to confirm the presence of cholera."
