Protesters and fans gathered at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State on Thursday night to hold a candlelight procession in honor of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. However, reports emerged that teargas was allegedly used to disperse the crowd during the peaceful event.

The protest was organized by the management of the late singer to pay tribute to his memory. Participants, dressed in white T-shirts, played and danced to Mohbad's songs as a sign of respect. The event had been announced earlier in the week through the official X handle of the deceased.

While some attendees claimed that police officers fired teargas canisters to disperse the crowd, others suggested that unidentified individuals caused the disturbance. According to witnesses, police officers had been present at the tollgate to provide security for the event.

Popular skit maker Oluwadolaz and actress Iyabo Ojo shared videos on social media, confirming the use of teargas during the procession. However, the protest organizers clarified that it was not a protest but a candlelight procession.

The candlelight procession began at 5 pm, and a tribute concert was scheduled to take place at 8 pm at Muri Okunola Park. Efforts to reach the police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

The incident at Lekki Tollgate brought back memories of the 2020 #EndSARS protests, during which security forces were accused of using force against peaceful demonstrators at the same location, resulting in fatalities and injuries
