The Labour Party has called for a formal investigation into the alleged misuse of campaign funds during the 2023 presidential race. Prominent figures, including Peter Obi and Aisha Yesufu, have been accused of financial misconduct. Party officials demand transparency, while others dismiss the accusations as baseless.
The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has urged the National Security Adviser and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch an investigation into the alleged misuse of campaign funds during the 2023 presidential election. The party, led by Julius Abure, made this call at a press briefing in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on September 12.
Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, accused several prominent figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, activist Aisha Yesufu, and Pastor Itua Ighodalo, of mismanaging over ₦12 billion and $15 million meant for the party’s campaign. He also implicated Afenifere leaders Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni in additional financial irregularities, amounting to ₦600 million.
Arabambi questioned Yesufu’s recent public statements defending the financial transparency of the campaign, dismissing her remarks as attempts to cover up discrepancies. He emphasized the need for a thorough audit of all accounts linked to the accused individuals to ensure accountability.
In response, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, denied the allegations. He insisted that the campaign funds were properly managed, citing audited reports. Meanwhile, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, expressed surprise at the accusations but refrained from making an immediate comment, indicating that Afenifere may respond after reviewing the claims.
