In the early hours of the morning, a devastating fire broke out in the Dosumu area of Idumota, Lagos Island, destroying properties worth millions of naira. The fire, believed to have originated from the second floor of a four-story building, quickly spread to four neighboring buildings.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and firefighters, rushed to the scene to combat the inferno. However, their efforts were hindered by challenges, particularly the scarcity of water.
Amidst the chaos, one of the affected buildings reportedly collapsed, adding to the severity of the situation. Police officers from Adeniji police station and Lion building cordoned off the area to prevent looting by opportunistic individuals.
Tragically, there are unconfirmed reports of individuals sustaining fire burns while attempting to salvage their belongings from the engulfed buildings. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Territorial Coordinator of NEMA in the South-West Region, highlighted the dire situation, stating that fire trucks had to travel as far as Guinness to source water due to the scarcity.
Farinloye further revealed that three four-story buildings and one five-story building were engulfed in the flames, with one of the four-story buildings collapsing under the intensity of the fire. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved emergency response measures and fire safety protocols to mitigate such disasters in the future.
