In a candid address to the National Assembly Joint Committee on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Minister Betta Edu voiced concerns about the inadequacy of the proposed budget for her ministry in the 2024 fiscal year. Defending the budget before the committee on Tuesday, Edu emphasized that the 28 percent increase in the overhead cost, bringing it to N532.5 billion, falls short of effectively addressing the escalating inflation in the country.
Edu highlighted the disparity in the capital budget, stating that the allocated N1.535 billion for 2024 is a minimal increase from the previous year and does not align with the ministry's mandate to reduce poverty. The minister expressed humility and sincerity in urging the committee to reconsider the budget in light of the nation's pressing needs.
Additionally, Edu brought attention to a crucial omission in the 2024 budget proposal – the Humanitarian and Poverty Eradication Trust Fund. She outlined the fund's structure, involving contributions from the federal government, donor agencies, the private sector, and innovative resource mobilization. Edu stressed the need for Nigeria to fulfill its part of the funding commitment.
Edu concluded by pledging accountability for the full implementation of the appropriated funds and urged the National Assembly to collaborate in addressing the nation's poverty challenges.
