The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated a fresh legal action against Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), unleashing a 26-count charge against him.
This indictment encompasses allegations of abuse of office and corruption, drawing attention to Emefiele's purported involvement in various illicit activities. As revealed by Channels Television’s Judiciary Correspondent Shola Soyele, the charges were meticulously crafted by EFCC Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) and filed on April 3rd.
Among the counts outlined in the charge sheet, the EFCC alleges that Emefiele, between 2022 and 2023, abused his authority by arbitrarily allocating foreign exchange totaling $2.1 billion without proper bidding processes, thus undermining the rights of Nigerians. Emefiele is scheduled to face arraignment before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Monday, April 8, where he will confront the weight of these accusations head-on.
On social media, Nigerians express a range of views, with some questioning the timing and motives behind the charges, while others highlight disparities in the treatment of corruption cases and call for broader accountability. "Hypocritical for EFCC to target Emefiele while corrupt ministers walk free," tweeted one user.
