Miyetti Allah has alleged the poisoning of 20 cows in Benue’s Agatu LGA, sparking tensions. MACBAN’s chairman claimed a farmer laced feed with poison, leading to the deaths. Authorities confirmed an arrest as investigations continue, with calls for more security to prevent further violence in the region.
The Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised concerns over the alleged poisoning of 20 cows in Agatu Local Government Area. According to the association's chairman, Risku Muhammed, the incident occurred in Ucha village, where a farmer allegedly laced rice chaff with poison before inviting a herder to graze his cattle.
Muhammed claimed that 13 cows died instantly, while seven others were undergoing treatment by veterinary doctors. He further accused unidentified criminals of stealing 200 cows in the same area just days earlier. Security operatives reportedly intervened and arrested one suspect, while others remain at large.
The MACBAN chairman expressed frustration over the frequent targeting of herders and their livestock in Agatu, listing multiple communities where similar incidents have been recorded. However, he commended the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, for his swift intervention, noting that efforts were ongoing to maintain peace between herders and local farmers.
James confirmed receiving complaints from MACBAN and stated that an investigation had commenced. While acknowledging the progress made in fostering peace in Agatu, he warned that some criminal elements were still attempting to incite violence. He urged the state government to deploy more security personnel to reinforce existing peace efforts.
Benue State Police spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, stating that an arrest had been made and investigations were underway. Authorities reassured the public that efforts were being made to sustain stability in Agatu.
