The Lagos State Police Command has unveiled its investigative procedures in the wake of the tragic death of the 27-year-old rising music sensation, Mohbad, who passed away on September 12 and was laid to rest the following day. The circumstances surrounding his untimely demise have sparked widespread controversy on social media.
In a press conference held on Wednesday, Idowu Owohunwa, the State Commissioner of Police, assured the public that the police force is committed to thoroughly examining every piece of information, every individual, and every location associated with Mohbad's death. He disclosed that the police have issued invitation letters to individuals of interest related to the singer's passing, urging them to step forward and provide clarity regarding their involvement.
Commissioner Owohunwa cautioned that those who fail to respond to the invitations would be declared as wanted by the authorities. Additionally, he stated that if individuals connected to the case are found to be outside Nigeria, the police would not hesitate to engage the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) for assistance.
Owohunwa emphasized the importance of utilizing Mohbad's case to combat bullying and safeguard upcoming artists or individuals experiencing harassment in silence.
He asserted, "Steps have been taken, contacts have been made, formal letters sent, and we have started the process of even effecting arrest. And everybody that is remotely connected or directly connected, we have listed them all out and we have established contact with them."
Furthermore, Owohunwa called for immediate police protection for Mohbad's family.
The press conference, which was broadcasted via Instagram Live, witnessed the presence of prominent figures like Iyabo Ojo, Foluke Daramola, and Kiekie, who are part of the #JusticeForMohBad campaign.
In response to the tragedy, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, initiated a 13-member special investigation team to delve into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad's death. Additionally, the Department of State Services (DSS) has been invited to collaborate in the ongoing investigation.
