The Nigerian Navy (NN) finds itself grappling with the sudden demise of one of its long-serving civilian staff members, Ifeanyi Onumaegbu. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, announced on Thursday that an investigation has been initiated to uncover the circumstances surrounding Onumaegbu's untimely death.
Onumaegbu, a dedicated member of the Ministry of Defence attached to the Laboratory Department of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital (NNRH) in Ojo, Lagos, had been serving diligently since 2009. His presence and contributions were integral to the operations of the facility, earning him respect and recognition among his peers.
The somber announcement by Vice-Adm. Ogalla shed light on the series of events leading to Onumaegbu's tragic passing. According to preliminary findings, a distressing altercation occurred on March 26, involving the deceased, a civilian lady, and several Naval personnel within the confines of the Navy Town Barracks. The aftermath of this confrontation seemed to have cast a shadow over Onumaegbu's final days.
The harrowing discovery was made on March 31 when Onumaegbu was found lifeless in his office at the NNRH. The shock and sorrow reverberated throughout the naval community as news of his passing spread. Immediate actions were taken by the NN, as all individuals suspected to be involved in the altercation were promptly identified and placed under close custody for further investigation.
Expressing profound condolences to Onumaegbu's family, Vice-Adm. Ogalla assured the public that every possible measure is being taken to unravel the truth behind his death. In response to the family's request, arrangements were made to transfer Onumaegbu's body to a reputable government hospital in Lagos for a thorough autopsy, aiming to provide clarity and closure to his loved ones.
