The Federal Government's push for improved energy infrastructure within military barracks has taken a significant leap forward as Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced the release of N12.7 billion towards the provision of smart meters. This announcement comes as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and eliminating the challenges associated with estimated billing.
The metering project, funded from the N40 billion earmarked for mass metering, signifies a renewed commitment to prioritize electricity supply to army formations nationwide. Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at the Headquarters of the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja Military Cantonment, Minister Adelabu outlined the objectives of the exercise, emphasizing the importance of accurate billing and easing collections.
"This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda to ensure regular electricity supply to army formations nationwide," stated Minister Adelabu, highlighting the administration's dedication to addressing the energy needs of the armed forces. He further emphasized the tamper-proof nature of the smart meters, designed to eliminate energy theft and provide customers with monthly consumption statements via a dedicated app.
Moreover, Minister Adelabu underscored the integration of off-grid solar power supply into the metering project, particularly for barracks located in remote areas without grid access. This strategic approach aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply to military installations, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and troop welfare.
The significance of this initiative was echoed by Maj.-Gen. A. Adetuyi, commander of the 9th Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja, who highlighted the brigade's longstanding struggle with erratic power supply. The implementation of smart meters is poised to address such challenges, providing barracks with reliable and uninterrupted electricity, thus bolstering military readiness and morale.
