In a recent crackdown, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) intercepted and destroyed counterfeit beverage operations valued at over N750 million in Aba, Abia state.
The Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that the illicit activities included the production of fake wines, soft drinks, and other contaminated products.
The counterfeiters replicated various popular brands, engaging in date revalidation for expired items and packaging fake products for unsuspecting consumers.
Over 1,500 cartons of fake and substandard products were destroyed, and 300 cartons were evacuated to the NAFDAC warehouse.
The operation led to the shutdown of the entire market until an agreement was reached with stakeholders. Adeyeye warned of the health risks associated with consuming adulterated alcohol, emphasizing the potential for severe consequences, including organ failure and death.
