Nigeria's National Grid collapsed again on October 14, 2024, causing widespread power outages across multiple states. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the incident, which affected their service areas. Frequent grid failures have intensified amid rising electricity tariffs, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in the country's energy infrastructure.
Nigeria experienced widespread darkness on October 14, 2024, as the National Grid collapsed once again, marking yet another incident in the country’s ongoing power supply crisis. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the general system collapse at 6:48 PM, leading to power outages across its service areas, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
In a statement, EEDC Spokesperson Emeka Ezeh expressed regret over the situation and assured customers that they were on standby, awaiting updates from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo regarding the restoration of power. The Eko Distribution Company also reported similar disruptions, urging its customers to bear with them as they worked towards restoring services.
This incident follows a trend of frequent collapses of the national grid, which has failed approximately 227 times over the past 14 years. The power supply challenges have been exacerbated by a significant increase in electricity tariffs, which rose by 240% in April 2024, adding to the difficulties faced by Nigerians.
