The Association of Table Water Producers in Nigeria raised concerns about the escalating cost of production, signaling a potential increase in the price of a sachet of water to N100.
The association lamented the rising production expenses, citing a surge in material costs that is "crippling their business and forcing them into huge debt." Currently, a sachet of water is sold for N50 in some regions, but the association fears it may double if the situation persists. Leaders of the association emphasized the challenges, pointing to a drastic rise in the cost of materials, particularly nylon, which has surged from N1,100 to between N3,600 and N3,700 per kilogram.
The growing economic strain on water producers, coupled with frequent and substantial increments in material prices, is jeopardizing the affordability of this essential commodity. The association pleaded with Nigerians for understanding, expressing the difficulty in continually raising water prices, and warned of a potential future where water could cost N100 per sachet.
This unsettling revelation comes amidst a nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress against the soaring cost of living and hardships in the country.
