NBA President Yakubu Maikyau criticizes lawyers and judges for conflicting court orders in the Kano Emirate dispute involving Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero. He calls for urgent professional conduct review and investigations by the National Judicial Council to uphold legal integrity
Yakubu Maikyau, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has criticized lawyers and judges for their roles in the conflicting injunctions surrounding the Kano Emirate dispute.
The legal tussle involves two conflicting court orders regarding the reinstated emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
Justice S. A. Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano ordered Sanusi's eviction from Gidan Rumfa palace. Conversely, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of Kano State High Court restrained security agencies from evicting or harassing Sanusi. This legal confusion has led to public protests by supporters of both emirs.
In response, Maikyau expressed dismay over the conduct of legal professionals involved, highlighting the need for an urgent review of their professional behavior.
He called for an investigation by the heads of the courts and urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to take necessary actions based on their findings.
Maikyau stated, "The conflicting orders issued by the courts have brought disgrace to the profession and exposed it to public ridicule. This situation, which could have been avoided, has damaged the legal profession's reputation."
He stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of the legal profession and announced that the NBA would investigate the conduct of the involved lawyers. If professional misconduct is found, disciplinary actions will be pursued.
The NBA President’s remarks underline the critical need for accountability and ethical conduct within Nigeria's legal system, especially in high-profile cases like the Kano Emirate tussle.
