Jose Peseiro has officially stepped down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, and new details shed light on the reasons behind the split with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). While the NFF expressed interest in retaining the 63-year-old coach, negotiations for a new contract reached an impasse.

The NFF proposed maintaining Peseiro's current salary of $50,000 per month, but the Portuguese coach insisted on a significant increase, demanding a record $120,000 monthly pay.

The disagreement on financial terms led to the breakdown of negotiations, resulting in Peseiro's departure. Despite the coach's successful stint that saw the Super Eagles secure second place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the salary dispute ultimately influenced the decision.

Peseiro, appointed in May 2022, leaves with a record of 11 wins, four draws, and seven losses in 22 games under his coaching tenure.
