Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has clarified that Super Eagles coach Finidi George's contract extends until 2026, not just one year. The contract includes targets such as qualifying for the Nations Cup and reaching the World Cup quarter-finals. Finidi chose his assistant coaches.
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has provided clarity on the contract details for the newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Finidi George. Unveiled at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Finidi’s contract has sparked speculation, with some reports suggesting a one-year term. However, Gusau dispelled these claims during an appearance on the TV show Soccer Africa.
Gusau emphasized, "I don’t know where the one-year contract information came from. As per our agreement with Finidi, he is set to lead the team until the end of 2026." He further elaborated that the contract encompasses several performance targets. "The key objectives include qualifying for the next year's Nations Cup, reaching at least the semi-finals, securing a spot in the World Cup, and aiming for a quarter-final finish in the World Cup," he explained.
Additionally, Gusau highlighted that the federation did not impose any assistant coaches on Finidi. "Finidi personally selected his assistants, including Daniel Amokachi, Benjamin James, Olatunji Baruwa, Chima Onyeike, and Mehmet Ozturk. The NFF Technical Director proposed the names, but the final decision was made by Finidi," Gusau noted.
The Super Eagles are gearing up for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. They will face South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on June 7th, followed by a game against Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan three days later. The appointment of Finidi, a former Super Eagles winger and Enyimba FC coach, has been met with optimism, with the NFF setting high expectations for his tenure.
