NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expresses confidence that Nigeria's Super Eagles will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a challenging start in the qualifiers. Currently fifth in their group, the team aims to improve their performance in upcoming matches, including crucial AFCON qualifiers against Libya.
The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, is optimistic about the Super Eagles qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a rocky start to their campaign. The team has only secured three points from four matches, with three draws and a defeat to Benin Republic.
Currently fifth in their qualifying group, the Super Eagles are trailing behind South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin by four points. Gusau acknowledges the challenges faced but remains confident in the team's ability to bounce back. “I believe we will qualify for the next World Cup in 2026,” he stated, highlighting ongoing efforts to regain momentum.
As they prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures, including a two-legged match against Libya in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Gusau is committed to supporting the team. The first leg will be held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, followed by the return match in Libya the following week. Gusau’s unwavering confidence reflects a strong desire to turn around the Super Eagles' fortunes in the competitive realm of international football.
