The death toll from the tragic boat accident in Niger State has risen to 42, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The incident occurred on October 1 when a boat carrying over 300 passengers, heading to Gbajibo for the Mawlid celebration, capsized in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Rescue operations, involving NSEMA and other emergency agencies, have so far saved 150 passengers. On Friday morning, six additional bodies were recovered. President Bola Tinubu has ordered the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the frequent boat mishaps and ensure compliance with regulations, including the night sailing ban.
