The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the auction of 15,325 litres of seized petrol to ease transportation difficulties during the festive season. The fuel, valued at N27.5 million, was confiscated during operations in Lagos and Ogun states. Hussein Ejibunu, the national coordinator for the service’s Operation Whirlwind, confirmed the auction plans in a press briefing on Saturday at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos.
The seized petrol will be sold at N10,000 for a 25-litre container, which brings the price per litre to approximately N400. This initiative is intended to reduce the transportation challenges faced by citizens during the busy holiday period. Ejibunu stated that all legal procedures, including a court condemnation order, have been completed to facilitate the sale of the petrol.
Since its launch on May 27, 2024, the operation has successfully seized illegal fuel, contributing to the country’s fight against economic sabotage. The Customs Service has urged its operatives to maintain the momentum in curbing the activities of these economic disruptors.
Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs, has supported this initiative, emphasizing that the auction will provide relief to the public, particularly those struggling with high transportation costs during the festive season. The NCS hopes that this move will help alleviate the pressure on the country’s fuel supply during a critical time.
