The Nigeria Police Force has responded to a viral video showing House of Representatives member Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh assaulting a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, after he refused to deliver a package to the lawmaker's home late at night. The video depicts Ikwechegh slapping Abuwatseya twice and making menacing threats about making him "disappear."
In an official statement released on their social media platforms, the Nigeria Police confirmed that they are investigating the incident, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja. They noted that Abuwatseya had filed a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters, prompting an immediate response from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command.
The Police Force emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and urged the public to refrain from misusing the name or authority of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others. Such actions, they stated, compromise the integrity and impartiality of the police service.
As the investigation unfolds, many are calling for accountability from elected officials, stressing that no one is above the law. This incident has sparked widespread outrage online, highlighting ongoing concerns about the treatment of citizens by those in power and the urgent need for police reforms in Nigeria.
