Approximately 61 migrants, predominantly from Nigeria, Gambia, and other African nations, are presumed to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea after their vessel was overwhelmed by high waves off the coast of Libya.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported the grim event, revealing that most victims, including women and children, were on a boat that departed from Zuwara on Libya's western coast.
Out of the 86 individuals aboard, 25 survivors were rescued and transferred to a detention center in Libya.
The IOM, emphasizing the perilous nature of the central Mediterranean migration route, expressed deep concern over the continuously rising death toll, with more than 2,250 lives lost this year alone.
