In a move set to revolutionize passport services across Nigeria, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, has announced the imminent commencement of home delivery for passports starting in June.
Tunji-Ojo made the groundbreaking revelation during an inspection of the electronic gates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport's new terminal in Abuja on May 24.
Stressing the need for efficiency and convenience, he outlined plans to initially roll out the service in key cities, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Abuja, with provisions for diaspora services in the United States and the United Kingdom. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of establishing a permanent solution for passport services, highlighting the delay caused by the lack of data centers.
However, he reassured citizens of the government's commitment to national security, announcing the completion of a state-of-the-art data center to ensure the integrity and security of biometric data. Moreover, in a bid to further streamline visa processing, Tunji-Ojo revealed the finalization of electronic visa technology, promising a reduction in processing time from 72 hours to just 48 hours.
With over 107,000 passports ready for collection, Kemi Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, urged applicants to promptly pick up their documents, marking a significant step forward in enhancing citizen services and national security.
