Orji Uzor Kalu, senator and former governor of Abia State, revealed that his monthly salary of N14 million is insufficient for his expenses. He emphasized the need for a six-year single term for politicians to improve governance and reduce financial pressures related to re-election.
In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, former Abia State Governor and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, revealed that his monthly earnings of N14 million are insufficient to cover his expenses. Representing the Abia North Senatorial District, Kalu expressed his commitment to serving his constituents while highlighting the financial challenges faced by lawmakers.
Kalu stated that the N14 million salary encompasses his earnings, overhead, and the salaries of his staff. However, he emphasized that this amount falls short, particularly when accounting for costs such as fuel for traveling to his constituency. “Let me be honest with you, do you know from this money I have to buy fuel to travel to my constituency? It’s not enough,” he lamented.
The senator defended his dedication to public service, asserting that he, along with most of his colleagues, is committed to fulfilling their responsibilities to their constituencies. “I will never fail in my duty, and I am sure most senators are doing their duties in their constituencies,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the political landscape, Kalu proposed a shift to a six-year single term for governors and presidents to alleviate the pressure of re-election and enhance governance. He argued that the current focus on re-election detracts from politicians’ ability to prioritize the needs of the people.
