Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has ushered in a new era of consistent electricity supply with the recent inauguration of the 181-megawatt Geometric Power Plant in Aba. Vice President Kashim Shettima officially opened the facility on Monday, located in the Osisioma industrial hub. The power plant labeled the ‘first integrated electricity facility in Nigeria,’ emerged from a project initiated in 2004 under Governor Orji Uzor Kalu. The $800 million project, including a 27km natural gas pipeline, led by Geometrics Power Limited, currently generates and distributes 141 megawatts, with the potential to reach 181 megawatts upon the delivery of the final turbine.
Governor Otti explained the challenges faced during the project's progression, involving financial restructuring and resolving issues related to the sale of Aba Invest Island and changes in the ownership of the oil block supplying gas to Geometric. Despite the setbacks, Otti affirmed that the power plant is now operational, minimizing power outages in the state. Residents have already experienced the positive impact, celebrating 48 hours of uninterrupted power supply.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, the enthusiasm over improved infrastructure continues as Governor Sanwo-Olu's red rail line becomes operational. Lagosians are jubilant, celebrating the efficient and reliable transportation system that is set to ease the city's congestion and enhance mobility. The developments in both Abia and Lagos mark significant strides in addressing critical infrastructure needs across the country.
