Twenty medical students kidnapped in Benue State have been rescued following a coordinated operation involving the National Security Adviser, police, DSS, and military personnel. The students were abducted while traveling for a convention. Their safe return highlights ongoing efforts to combat rising abduction cases in Nigeria.
Twenty medical students kidnapped in Benue State have regained their freedom, according to security sources. The operation, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, involved a collaborative effort among various security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and military personnel, with support from the Benue State government.
The students were abducted last Thursday while traveling along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu federal highway en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual convention in Enugu State. Following their disappearance, a team led by the Inspector General of Police arrived in Benue on Monday to spearhead search efforts.
The successful recovery of the students marks a significant moment amidst ongoing security challenges in the region, where abductions have become alarmingly frequent. Families of the abducted students had expressed their distress, with mothers like one who fervently pleaded for her son’s safe return, calling on President Bola Tinubu to ensure their release.
As the students return home, the rescue operation highlights the coordinated efforts of security forces and the continued need for vigilance and action against kidnapping incidents that have plagued Nigeria.
