Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun appointed Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess-in-Slums Africa and world record-breaking chess player, as the State's Sports Ambassador.

Onakoya gained international recognition after playing chess for over 58 hours in New York City's Times Square to raise funds for underprivileged children's education in Africa.

Governor Abiodun commended Onakoya's determination and resilience, citing his establishment of the Chess-in-Slums Africa foundation as an inspiration to youth across Nigeria.

In honor of Onakoya's achievements, the governor announced the commencement of the State Chess Competition to be held statewide.

Abiodun expressed pride in hosting the upcoming National Sports Festival and pledged support for chess, highlighting its inclusion in the event. He appointed Onakoya as the State's Sports Ambassador and pledged a sponsored prize for the chess competition winner.

Onakoya, hailing from Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State, expressed gratitude for Nigerian support and shared his vision to promote chess despite its limited popularity in the country.

The appointment signifies a recognition of Onakoya's contributions to sports and youth empowerment, aiming to inspire others to excel despite challenges.
