In a resolute stand, the Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, along with allied community-based women's organizations, has urged Shell to undertake a thorough cleanup of the Niger Delta region.
This call follows Shell's announcement of divesting its on-shore assets to investors, raising concerns among affected women about the swift nature of these plans. Emem Okon, spokesperson for Kebetkache, criticized Shell for attempting to evade responsibility and highlighted the lack of necessary consultations with communities impacted by decades of environmental damage.
The women's group vehemently rejects irresponsible divestment, urging the government to mandate companies to clean polluted sites and restore lost livelihood opportunities before any asset transfer.
They call for a halt in the sale of assets without ecosystem restoration and demand responsible corporate conduct.
