The Nigerian Federal Government spent approximately N701 million on First Lady Remi Tinubu's foreign trips over three months, raising concerns about government spending amid economic hardships. The allocation has sparked public outcry and criticism, with many calling for accountability and transparency from the First Lady's office.
In just three months, the Nigerian Federal Government has reportedly expended approximately N701 million on foreign trips for First Lady Remi Tinubu, spanning five countries. This financial commitment comes amidst widespread scrutiny over government spending during economic hardships faced by many citizens.
The staggering amount was disclosed through an analysis by the civic tech platform GovSpend, which revealed that the government paid out N700,707,532 for foreign trips. Notably, a trip to the United States alone cost N77,659,888, while a subsequent visit to France required N149,794,284. Additional trips to Mozambique, Ethiopia, and London collectively contributed to the hefty total, with expenditures for foreign exchange payments amounting to N126,295,377 for the London trip.
Further aggravating public sentiment, the government had previously allocated N1.5 billion for the procurement of vehicles for the Office of the First Lady, as outlined in the N2.1 trillion supplementary budget approved by the National Assembly. This allocation has drawn criticism, particularly from political figures like former Chief Whip Ali Ndume, who asserted that the vehicle budget was intended for the Presidency rather than for the First Lady.
Public reactions on social media have been harsh, with many Nigerians labeling Remi Tinubu as “the most wicked First Lady” due to her perceived lack of positive impact. Calls for accountability echo as citizens question the justification for such extravagant spending while many struggle to meet basic needs.
As concerns mount, the spotlight is now on the First Lady and her office to demonstrate a commitment to transparency and responsible governance.
