The Kano State Hisbah Board has reportedly arrested 11 Muslims for violating the Ramadan fast by eating during the day. The arrests were part of the annual Ramadan enforcement operations, involving searches of eateries and markets. The Public Relations Officer, Lawal Ibrahim, confirmed the arrests, mentioning that 10 men and one woman were apprehended, the latter caught eating from her groundnut-selling stall.
Nigerians took to social media to express their reactions. Some questioned the compulsory nature of fasting, considering health conditions and economic challenges. Others humorously remarked on the seemingly strict enforcement, suggesting that religion should not be enforced by force. A few users pointed out the differences in Islamic practices among Hausa Muslims and questioned the approach.
Comments ranged from amusement to criticism, with one user highlighting the police's focus on arresting individuals for eating during Ramadan while neglecting issues like banditry. Another user criticized the potential impact on those who may be on medication or dealing with health issues.
