Nigeria's security crisis deepens as bandits kill over 40 in Plateau State's Zurak village. The attack, involving heavily armed assailants on motorcycles, has forced residents to flee. The delayed security response raises concerns, highlighting the urgent need for improved protection measures.
In a devastating attack, bandits have reportedly killed over 40 people, including local vigilantes, in Zurak village, located in the Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State. The assault, which took place around 5 PM on Monday, has left the community in shock and mourning.
Eyewitnesses recount a harrowing scene as the bandits, arriving on motorcycles and armed with sophisticated weapons, began shooting indiscriminately at villagers who were going about their daily activities. "It was around 5 PM when the attack happened," said a resident. "People were just going about their normal activities when the shooting started."
Due to the poor communication network in the area, the incident could not be immediately reported. However, Sahpi’i Sambo, a youth leader from the community, confirmed the attack to Daily Trust. "More than 40 people were killed while many were injured," Sambo reported. "Residents of the village have fled to neighboring communities for cover. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was deadly."
The scale of the attack and the absence of immediate security response have raised significant concerns about the safety and security of the region. The bandits, described as heavily armed and riding two to a motorcycle, left a trail of devastation in their wake.
Efforts to reach DSP Alabo Alfred, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, where banditry and violent attacks have become increasingly frequent. Local communities continue to bear the brunt of these assaults, often with inadequate protection and delayed responses from security forces.
As the survivors of Zurak village seek refuge in neighboring areas, the call for enhanced security measures and immediate action to protect vulnerable communities grows louder. The tragic events in Wase Local Government Area highlight the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response to the menace of banditry in Nigeria.
