Nigeria's Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, pointed fingers at the former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, attributing the country's current hardship to certain monetary policies and actions implemented during Emefiele's tenure.
Speaking at a function in Abuja on Sunday, Akpabio criticized Emefiele, alleging that he left behind multiple debts and an economic mess for the current administration to grapple with.
"The kind of debts and economic mess that we are in, a lot of people do not understand," Akpabio stated. He added that the government is considering which allegations to prosecute Emefiele for, citing numerous misconducts during his time as CBN governor.
Highlighting the severity of the economic situation, Akpabio emphasized the challenges faced by Nigerians, including hunger and the struggle to afford three square meals a day.
Meanwhile, Nigeria is grappling with a rising inflation rate, reaching 29.90%, and a food inflation rate of 34.41%, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics.
In response to the economic challenges, President Muhammadu Buhari recently met with governors to address the issue of hardship and insecurity. Buhari reiterated his administration's commitment to avoiding food importation, citing its promotion of rent seeking and corruption.
Additionally, the president announced the release of 40,000 tonnes of grain to stabilize food prices in the market. This move aims to alleviate the burden on Nigerians amidst the economic difficulties they face.
