Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), passed away at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Tuesday. His demise was announced by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who serves as the Secretary of the Borno State Council, Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Ciroma's tenure as NLC president spanned from 1984 to 1988, marked by significant contributions to the labor movement. Despite being forced out of office by the military administration of Gen Ibrahim Babangida, Ciroma continued his advocacy.
The burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 pm in Maiduguri. Ciroma's legacy in unionism, including his tenure as the Sole Administrator of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers during the Abacha regime, leaves a lasting imprint on Nigeria's labor history.
