In a statement released by the Nigerian Army, it has been confirmed that a minor explosion occurred in a farmland near the Mammy Market within the Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos on Monday.

According to Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, the explosion is believed to have been triggered by the burning of refuse and other inflammable debris by a farmer cultivating the farmland. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Despite the lack of casualties, concerns have been raised due to the cantonment's recent clearance and certification as free of unexploded ordnances. This historical context of previous explosions within the cantonment has led to apprehension among the general public. In response, the Nigerian Army has assured residents that the situation is under control. The Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has cordoned off the area of the farmland to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Amidst the ongoing investigation, residents in the general area have been urged not to panic, with assurances provided regarding their safety. This incident underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols within military installations and highlights the need for continued vigilance in preventing similar incidents in the future.
