The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) in Nigeria has urged President Bola Tinubu not to follow the path of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, in making what they consider to be skewed appointments. While acknowledging that northerners may not have a right to complain about perceived imbalances in Tinubu's appointments, the youth group stressed that the nation should not continue with this trend.
Some northern leaders have criticized President Tinubu for allegedly favoring the southern part of the country in his choice of appointees. They claim that Tinubu has appointed more Southern Christians into key positions, while neglecting northerners who supported his rise to power.
The NYLF's National President, Elliot Afiyo, pointed out that Buhari had created a lopsided appointment gap during his tenure, with 80% for the north and 20% for the south. Afiyo encouraged Tinubu not to perpetuate this pattern and called for a more balanced approach to appointments, emphasizing that previous Nigerian leaders have favored their regions.
The youth leader highlighted the need for a fair and balanced approach to appointments, raising concerns about the country's future if such trends persist. While acknowledging the challenges and disparities in past appointments, the NYLF advocates for a more equitable distribution of roles and responsibilities in the nation's leadership.
