The National Television Authority (NTA) has secured the exclusive rights to broadcast all 52 matches of the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). This announcement follows MultiChoice's recent decision not to broadcast the tournament on SuperSport (SS).
"In a groundbreaking move, the NTA and Afro Sports have inked a game-changing memorandum of understanding to broadcast 52 thrilling matches of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire," NTA announced on X platform.
Last Wednesday, MultiChoice confirmed its inability to secure the broadcasting rights for the 2023 AFCON, stating, "However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels."
The 2023 AFCON kicks off with the Group A match between the host nation, Ivory Coast, and Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on January 13, 2024. Nigeria's Super Eagles, placed in Group A alongside Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau, will open their campaign against Equatorial Guinea at the same venue on Sunday, January 14, at 2:00 pm.
This development marks a significant moment for NTA, stepping into the spotlight to bring the excitement of AFCON to millions of viewers across the nation. As football enthusiasts eagerly await the tournament, all eyes will be on NTA to deliver comprehensive and high-quality coverage of the matches.
The exclusive broadcasting rights secured by NTA not only position the national broadcaster as a major player in sports coverage but also fill the void left by DSTV, paving the way for a new era in sports broadcasting in Nigeria. The Super Eagles, eyeing their fourth AFCON title, will undoubtedly have the nation's full support as they strive for victory in this prestigious tournament
