Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made a bold assertion, declaring that Western Liberal Democracy has failed in Africa as it was imposed on the continent. Delivering a keynote address at a high-level consultation on 'Rethinking Western Liberal Democracy for Africa' in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo argued that this system does not consider the majority's viewpoint and emphasized the need for "Afro democracy" tailored to Africa's needs.
Criticizing the representative nature of liberal democracy, he questioned the exclusion of minorities and urged a shift towards a government system designed and defined by Africans. Obasanjo urged leaders to examine the shortcomings of liberal democracy and explore alternative approaches that align with Africa's culture and traditions, fostering a meaningful and inclusive system of governance.
