Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns about Nigeria's diminishing respect for the rule of law, a critical intangible asset that strengthens a nation. In a statement posted on his social media handle in honor of International Democracy Day, Obi highlighted that Nigeria has been straying from the principles of true democracy.
Obi emphasized the necessity for Nigerians to unite in their efforts to nurture and deepen the country's democracy. He expressed worries about the erosion of democratic ideals and principles, warning that if left unchecked, it could lead to further lawlessness.
The former governor of Anambra State called attention to the prevailing issues of widespread corruption, constitutional abuse, disregard for the rule of law, and transactional politics that span the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. These challenges, he noted, contradict the essence of democracy and push the nation further away from its democratic foundations.
Obi urged all Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening the nation's democracy, emphasizing his dedication to working towards a new and genuinely democratic Nigeria. He believed that with proper leadership, Nigeria could benefit every citizen, and he called on Nigerians not to lose hope, asserting that a new and truly democratic Nigeria is attainable.
