Onyinyechi Mark made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games by winning Nigeria’s first gold medal in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category. With a record-breaking 150kg lift, Mark surpassed the previous record, defeating China’s Cui Jianjin and Mexico’s Amelia Perez to secure her victory.
Onyinyechi Mark has secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Competing in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category, she set a new Paralympic record by lifting 150kg, surpassing the previous mark held by Lucy Ejike, also from Nigeria.
Mark’s remarkable performance placed her ahead of China’s Cui Jianjin, who earned silver with a 140kg lift, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who took bronze with 130kg.
Her achievement continues Nigeria's dominance in Paralympic powerlifting, following the country’s 10-medal success at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Mark’s victory has further solidified her place in Paralympic history.
