The Lagos State Police Command has responded to a widely circulated video showing two officers soliciting a bribe from a drone operator on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.
In the footage, the officers can be seen interrogating a cyclist about his drone usage and demanding a permit, which the cyclist did not possess.
The officers insisted on the necessity of obtaining a permit from either the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) or the police before operating the drone. After delaying the cyclist for over an hour, the officers were caught on camera asking for a bribe.
In a statement, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command's spokesperson, defended the officers' actions as within the scope of Nigerian aviation laws, which mandate a permit for drones weighing over 250 grams.
However, the command condemned the officers' unprofessional behavior and announced disciplinary measures against them. CP Adegoke Fayoade directed the Commanding Officer of 49 PMF Akodo to produce the officers for appropriate action.
The incident underscores concerns about police misconduct and corruption, prompting calls for accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies.
