BBC executives have announced the revival of their chess coverage with a new series titled "Chess Masters," set to air on BBC2 next year. The decision comes amidst a worldwide resurgence in the popularity of the game, fueled in part by the success of Netflix's hit drama "The Queen’s Gambit." The series, reminiscent of the iconic "The Master Game" that aired from 1976 to 1983, aims to showcase highly skilled players competing for the title of Chess Master.
Camilla Lewis, executive producer for Curve Media, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its inclusivity and the opportunity it provides for amateur players to challenge top talents. She emphasized the emotional and strategic depth of the game, promising viewers unique insights into both psychological and practical gameplay.
However, the announcement has not been received positively in Nigeria, where people are angered by the failure to credit Tunde Onakoya, a Nigerian chess master who recently broke the Guinness World Record for chess. Instead, the focus has been on celebrities like Taylor Swift and Anya Taylor-Joy, sparking frustration among Nigerians who feel their achievements are being overshadowed.
Malcolm Pein, director of the English Chess Federation, hailed the return of chess to television screens after over three decades, noting the game's broad appeal across demographics.
The global chess community, which boasts over 600 million regular players, eagerly anticipates the series, which promises to offer a fresh perspective on the ancient game. BBC factual entertainment commissioning boss Catherine Catton emphasized the unique nature of "Chess Masters," highlighting its focus on strategy and intellectual prowess in contrast to physical competitions.
The success of "The Queen’s Gambit," starring Anya Taylor-Joy, further fueled interest in chess, setting records as Netflix's most-watched drama. With celebrities like Taylor Swift referencing chess in their work, the game has garnered newfound coolness and cultural relevance.
As preparations for "Chess Masters" unfold, anticipation continues to build among fans worldwide, eager to witness the timeless game's revival on the small screen.
