At the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, Nigerian athlete Flora Ugwunwa clinched a silver medal in the women’s javelin F54 event with a throw of 19.26 meters. This achievement marks Ugwunwa’s third consecutive Paralympic medal, following her gold medals in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021. Ugwunwa secured her silver on her second attempt, holding off competition from Iran’s Salehi Elham.
Despite five attempts to improve her score, Ugwunwa could not surpass her earlier throw. The gold medal went to Uzbekistan's Nurkhon Kurbanova, who delivered a dominant performance with a winning throw of 21.12 meters, breaking Ugwunwa’s previous world record of 20.25 meters set in Rio.
Kurbanova's victory is particularly sweet, having lost to Ugwunwa four years ago. In this final, she consistently threw beyond 20 meters, showcasing her exceptional skill. Ugwunwa's silver is Nigeria’s first medal in Para-Athletics and adds to the country’s tally of four medals at the ongoing Paralympic Games.
Team Nigeria’s success also includes a gold medal in powerlifting won by Onyinyechi Mark, along with a silver from Esther Nworgu in women’s 41kg para-powerlifting, and a bronze medal in badminton by Eniola Bolaji. Ugwunwa's remarkable journey continues to inspire, as she adds yet another accolade to her illustrious career.
