PENGASSAN raises concerns over the influx of Indian workers in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, accusing companies of abusing the expatriate quota system. The union urges the Federal Government to act swiftly to protect Nigerian jobs and ensure local employment in the sector.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has raised alarms over the increasing influx of Indian nationals into Nigeria's oil and gas sector, accusing them of taking over low-level jobs that should be reserved for Nigerians.
PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo highlighted concerns about the abuse of the expatriate quota system, with Indian workers filling roles such as vulcanizers and gatekeepers at companies like Sterling Oil and Indorama. Osifo criticized the government's failure to address this issue despite repeated engagements and warned that PENGASSAN might resort to confrontation if Nigerian workers' rights continue to be undermined.
He called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to protect local employment opportunities and ensure that Nigeria’s oil resources benefit its citizens first.
