Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed disinterest in joining any coalition aimed solely at seizing power. Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja, Obi emphasized prioritizing Nigeria’s development over political power struggles.
Obi highlighted the need for political discourse centered on addressing pressing issues like insecurity, education, and poverty, rather than strategizing for the 2027 elections. “What is important is discussing Nigeria. It’s about securing the people, ensuring our children are in school, and improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” Obi stated.
He criticized the monetization of politics, noting its role in perpetuating corruption and public resource mismanagement. Obi stressed that the practice of using stolen funds to gain political power undermines governance and fuels societal challenges.
“We must address this system that encourages the theft of public funds for political campaigns. It’s a cycle that breeds insecurity and poverty,” he added.
Obi called for collective efforts to rebuild Nigeria, advocating for reforms that prioritize the welfare of citizens. He underscored the urgency of tackling insecurity and poverty, which he described as the country's most pressing concerns.
